As we told you earlier here, it was announced that in Amdo yesterday, former monk Norbu Damdrul became “the eighth monk or former monk to set himself on fire to protest China since March.” (See the New York Times report here.)
And today, by way of Voice of America, comes the news that “a Tibetan woman has killed herself by self-immolation in Aba Country of Sichuan province Monday around 1 PM local time.” As the VOA adds, “The U.S. State Department said last week that Washington is concerned about recent self-immolation of Tibetan monks, and the clear anger and frustration this trend represents.” See the full VOA report here. And National Public Radio has an up-to-date story here, which reports that the woman who died was a nun. An excerpt: “Free Tibet said the nun, 20-year-old Tenzin Wangmo, died on the scene after setting herself on fire early Monday afternoon outside Dechen Chokorling nunnery in Sichuan province’s Aba prefecture, where a number of other self-immolations have taken place this year. The group said she chanted slogans as she set herself alight, calling for greater religious freedom and the return of Tibet’s exiled Buddhist leader, the Dalai Lama.”
