Fifty-six members of the US House of Representatives have signed their names to a letter urging President Barack Obama to make it one of his top political priorities to address the human rights abuses in Tibet.
Written by House members James McGovern, a Democrat from Massachusetts, and Frank Wolf, a Republican from Virginia, the letter calls for Obama to increase political pressure on China and to choose a new Secretary of State who will advocate for Tibet. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is retiring next month.
“Especially given the desperate protests occurring in Tibet this past year,” the letter reads, “It is critical that the U.S. take a leading role and engage actively with partner nations on measures that could bring near-term improvements in the human rights situation in Tibet.”
