George Takei is famous for his role on Star Trek, his gay rights activism, and for winning the Internet with his 8,000,000+ followers on Facebook. He’s less well-known for his Buddhist faith (which you can read all about in his feature on Lion’s Roar, “Being Gay, Being Buddhist“). Here, take a look at how Buddhism crops up in his famously witty Facebook posts.

6. Forget the present

Takei’s posts are winning because they always get a double-chuckle: funny picture; grammar pun in the caption.

5. A classic

Better than the images are the captions: witty, personal, and insightful in a way few others can achieve.

4. Because we need a cat picture in the mix

Not to mention a good double-pun.

3. Nobody’s perfect

Love the shout-out to Sen. Mazie Hirono, here (for more, see our coverage when Hirono was elected as the first Buddhist U.S. senator).

2. A whole series of Dalai Lama quotes

For years, Takei has slipped in occasional tidbits of wisdom from His Holiness.

… and occasional uplifting news items, like this one:

(We have a deep appreciation for the Dalai Lama, as well. If you’re looking for more inspiration, check out the Dalai Lama Must-Reads section, filled with deeply-moving writing by and about His Holiness.)

1. FTW

One of the few times on social media that Takei has advertised his spirituality, and with impeccable comic style.

Be sure to read “Being Gay, Being Buddhist

And share it on Facebook, too!
