An initiative started by local Tibetan activist groups in France has resulted in more than fifty French municipalities adopting villages and towns in Tibet as sister cities. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the destruction of Tibetan culture with democratic governments around the world.
To adopt a village or town inside of Tibet, a French municipality must pass a motion “requesting European or UN resolutions, human rights, environment, and Tibetan cultural heritage to be respected in occupied Tibet.” Once adopted, the municipality adds a symbolic plaque to the entrance of its offices, indicating the adoption of a Tibetan sister city.
