On March 5, an 18-year-old man named Dorje was the latest Tibetan to self-immolate, this according to a press release from the exile base for Kirti Monastery, making him the third Tibetan to self-immolate in only a week. Dorje self-immolated while marching toward a government building located in Cha while shouting in protest of the restrictive atmosphere in Ngaba,. He died from his injuries. As Tibet Post International has reported, “These protests have occurred not only in the wake of the Chinese imposing more stringent policies in Tibet, but are occurring with greater frequency as Uprising Day approaches on March 10.”
In the leadup to March 10, much of Tibet is now under martial law, particularly Ngaba County (which is where Kirti Monastery is located).
As the International Campaign for Tibet recently pointed out, several journalists have gone into regions of Tibet in recent weeks, placing themselves in harm’s way to help give the country’s people a voice. Below you’ll find some of their stories.
