Soto Zen priest Shoshin Bob Kelly of Sokuji Zen Group in Minnesota passed away last Wednesday evening, at age 87. Shoshin, a dharma successor of Shoken Winecoff in the lineage of the late Dainin Katagiri Roshi, suffered a fall early Wednesday before being taken to a nearby hospital, where he passed away in the evening. His wife, Joy; his son, Bobbie; and his two ordained disciples, Kogetsu Denice Summerford and Taiju Geri Wilimek, were present during his final moments.
A memorial service will be held for Shoshin at Ryumonji Zen Monastery in Iowa on Sunday, June 24, 2012, in conjunction with a Shuso ceremony for their summer ango. For remembrances by Rev. Eido Bruce Espe and Rev. Jodo Cliff Clusin, see this article over at Sweeping Zen.
