The recent expulsion of Ajahn Brahm and his monastery from the Thai Forest Tradition due to his participation in a Bhikkhuni ordination ceremony shook the Western Sangha to the core. What seemed like a non-issue to traditionalists inflamed an equal rights struggle that has been a firestorm of drama in our culture for more than a hundred years. The dismissal of our cultural imperatives in this regard has revealed a distressingly deep rift between Thai monastics and the Western sangha.
