The U.S. Congress has advanced legislation that would provide funding for several programs in Tibet, including NGO grants, humanitarian aid for Tibetan refugees, various scholarship programs and democracy assistance. The House of Representatives approved the bill on July 9.
Todd Stein, director of Government Relations at the International Campaign for Tibet, said, “These bills highlight the United States Congress’ belief that the Tibetan culture and identity continues to face challenges on the Tibetan plateau and its appreciation of the effort being made by Tibetans in exile to preserve them.
“Congress also offers a new investment in helping Tibetan refugees sustain their unique identity by revitalizing half century-old settlements in South Asia.”
It is projected that Congress will spend upwards of $10 million to support these programs. The Senate is expected to approve the bills in the next few weeks.
