Beginning January 20, the Plum Village sangha will hold ceremonies and memorial events throughout their community marking the two-year anniversary of Thich Nhat Hanh’s death. The beloved Vietnamese Buddhist teacher, known as Thay by his students, passed away on January 22, 2022 in Hue, Vietnam at the age of 95.
Both online and in-person events are planned around the solar anniversary of Thich Nhat Hanh’s passing on January 22 and the lunar anniversary on January 29. To mark the end of their formal mourning period, the International Plum Village Community will hold a “Ceremony of Transformation to Ancestor” in Vietnam on January 29 to “recognize Thay as the fifth patriarch of his root temple, Từ Hiếu, and founder of the Plum Village sangha.”
“On this solemn and joyful occasion,” writes Plum Village, “we would like to invite our sangha friends around the world to gather and practice together.”
