The first volume of Franziska Oertle’s groundbreaking colloquial Tibetan coursebook, The Heart of Tibetan Language, has now been digitally released in Spanish by Dharma Publishing.
Translator Ana Carla Vergara Calvar served as the project’s coordinator, as well as one of its editors. Asked by Lion’s Roar about the project’s impetus and production, she told us:
“The Spanish edition originated from an idea proposed by the translator Helena Estefanía López Duque, whose initiative set the process — a two-year collaboration — in motion. Working in close dialogue with Franziska Oertle and with Juan Felipe García-Peña as linguistic consultant, the entire team of translators, reviewers and designers from different Spanish speaking countries — which includes Marina Martínez Meijide (who was also one of the editors), Elisa María Caño Hernández, Paula Takahashi, Diego Cadavid, Cinthia Font and Marco Vinicio Céspedes Coto — worked collaboratively and with great care to ensure that the Spanish edition remained faithful to the spirit and precision of the original work.
“As part of this process, the English and Tibetan content of the source text was carefully reviewed, refined and adjusted, enhancing the clarity and pedagogical coherence of this new edition.
“The main purpose of this Spanish edition is to offer all Spanish speakers — whether they know English or not — the opportunity to learn Tibetan and appreciate its nuances without relying on materials in other languages.”
